"What do you want to do for your birthday?", I asked myself. Well, in the past few weeks I had felt like it was time to get on the bike again, but I couldn't really fit it in between work and building my own freelance company and its website. So that this (birth)day off would be meant for cycling was pretty much a given. How I could really turn this day into a 'gift' from myself to myself, was if I did a long ride and if I would be able to enjoy it again. I hadn't cycled (except for work) since the 24 hour race on September 14th-15th, and for good reason. I absolutely hated cycling at the end of that race, so I needed a break from it all. There's more to life than cycling!! And several other things finally deserved some attention, too.

I – of course – knew I would eventually want to go cycling again, and as I just explained, today became that day πŸ™πŸΌπŸŒž

When making the route I checked the wind to pick a direction. Sadly I had to go West (boring!!) if I wanted tailwind during the second half, so I knew I had to work a little harder on the route if I wanted to keep it interesting surroundings-wise. For the specifics I therefore decided to have a look the new zip code-challenge from Wielervrienden, and I used Wandrer to pick some not-yet-cycled roads to go around Harmelen and Woerden.

It was nice to see some new stuff instead of seeing the same roads Komoot always picks whenever I go West. So, that's a tip!! (Nothing idyllic about the roads I used, but not knowing where I am exactly definitely tops cycling through Woerden for the 30th time πŸ˜….)

I made a 200km route because I hoped to discover I could still easily cover that distance. Unfortunately I encountered a little more rain than I anticipated, so I turned around earlier to (mainly) save my left foot from freezing off. The water that was leaking down my mudguard was blown directly onto my left shoe during the side-wind sections. Not much to be done about that. My foot was numb from the cold for the better part of the last 80 kilometres. As the main goal of today was for me to enjoy what I was doing, turning around and – thus – finally enjoying the tailwind was definitely my best option.

Now I would like to use the last sentence of this unintentionally long story to thank myself for my own gift: Thanks Wendy, very thoughtful 🧑🌞✨️
