As my eighth winter as a bike messenger is approaching, I'm also going through my eighth autumn. And boy, I hate autumn.
Why? Because I always struggle to adapt to having to deal with days on which it is constantly raining. It requires a different way of managing your cargo, your clothes, and your mood, even.
The biggest 'mindfuck' for me is that your own hands suddenly become your biggest enemy. You need to keep your stuff dry, but your hands are covered with water. Intuitively you want to use your hands (or your clothes) to wipe the water off of things. Which, of course, only makes everything more wet. You can try, but you can't win.
It's been a while since I did a full day of cycling, so despite the rain and all the annoyances that came with it, I was actually really enjoying myself today. It was great to spend a full day outside again, filled with fun short conversations. Cycling is still definitely my favourite part of the job, and today was a good reminder of that 🙂💙
